Dental Fissure Sealants Sherwood
Protect your teeth against cavities
Fissure Sealants
A fissure sealant is a tooth coloured material which is applied on the chewing surface of adult molar teeth in the early years in order to prevent cavities from developing later on. Sherwood Dental offers fissure sealants once the adult molars have fully developed on our younger patients here at our Sherwood practice. Once applied, the coating bonds to the tooth and lasts for several years. Here at Sherwood Dental, we believe in providing long term care for our patients. Fissure sealants are a great preventive solution for cavities and tooth decay and should you require this treatment, we’ll explain how they can help protect your teeth.
Why do some patients need fissure sealants?
The back molar teeth often have deep grooves (‘fissures’) on the biting surface, which can be impossible to clean with brushing alone. Food and plaque build up in these deep grooves eventually causing decay. Once this happens, it can’t be reversed, and a filling will be needed. Fissure sealants work by sealing the deep pits and grooves, making it easier to clean your teeth and preventing cavities from forming.
Receiving fissure sealants
Firstly, teeth which have the deepest grooves on which the sealants are being placed on will be cleaned and dried.
The chewing surface of the tooth will then be prepared to accommodate the sealant.
The Fissure Sealant is applied to the tooth using a small brush and then hardened by concentrated beam of ultraviolet light.
To learn if your child would be an ideal candidate for fissure sealants our dental professionals at Sherwood Dental advise that you bring your child in for a dental check-up at our Sherwood practice.
