What are dental implants?

Dental implants are considered the gold standard when replacing missing teeth in dentistry today. The implant is a metal screw that replaces the missing tooth root. Using careful placement and advanced technology it is able to fuse to the surrounding bone. This is called osseointegration. This usually occurs over the following few months. The strength of the integration is then tested and an impression (or mould) of the teeth and implant is made. A crown is then created that is carefully matched to the shape colour and texture of a natural tooth.

How much do dental implants cost?

Because no two patients are alike the type of implant, the number of appointments and the type of procedure varies widely. We like to have an initial examination where we can chat about the options available to you for your unique circumstance. Many patients have been able to take advantage of our zero interest payment plan, so treatment isn’t delayed. This helps reduce the risk of loss of bone structure and unwanted tooth movement which leads to bite abnormalities which occur over time when there is a missing tooth.

Dental Implants are the next best thing to natural tooth structure and although they are initially more expensive than other treatments, they can often be more cost effective over the long term. For example, a denture is usually cheaper than an implant but has to be replaced more often.

Are dental implants right for me?

Yes! Dental implants are the ideal choice for almost any adult or adolescent patient. There are a small number of health conditions and medications that make implants less suitable. Occasionally more complex cases are assessed and referred to a specialist periodontists or prosthodontists.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

  • They are strong and stable and the next best thing to natural teeth.
  • There’s no interference to everyday lifestyle such as eating, speaking laughing and smiling. So you won’t need to worry about a removable denture or replacement tooth falling out or becoming loose when you talk, eat or laugh. You can feel confident and comfortable in public because your teeth look natural.
  • Keep eating your favourite foods. The implant allows biting pressure that can’t be achieved with other tooth replacements or dentures. Eat comfortably without any concern about causing pain or damage.
  • Avoid premature ageing the have all seen in denture wearers. Dental implants help preserve bone so you can retain your natural face shape and a youthful appearance.
  • Stimulate bone growth and prevent jawbone deterioration maintaining jawbone strength and firmness.
  • No need to keep your teeth in a cup beside the bed! You can brush and floss exactly as you would with your natural teeth.
  • Implants can’t decay like natural teeth. However, good oral hygiene and regular dental appointments are still needed to maintain a healthy mouth and gums.
  • Protects and supports surrounding teeth. Tooth loss causes surrounding teeth to move, changing your smile and your bite. An implant is positioned within the jawbone so it helps prevent other adjacent teeth from moving.
  • They are long lasting. Bridges commonly last 8-12 years. With regular checks and good hygiene, implants can last a lifetime!
  • Implants are more reliable and have more predictable long-term results than other tooth replacement methods such as bridges, which also affect the neighbouring teeth the bridge attaches to.

How to Choose a Dentist for Dental Implants?

All registered dentists with sufficient post graduate training are allowed to place implants in Australia. However dental Implantology is highly technical and requires a high level of implant specific training and clinical skill. It is definitely not a “one size fits all” procedure. Many factors affect suitability and long term results must be assessed. A high level of experience is also needed to make sure your unique requirements are considered.
