“Dental implants don’t have to be complicated. I choose then as optimum treatment for friends and family when there's a missing tooth. Implants are a way to restore not only the function but also the appearance of our patients’ smiles.”
— Dr Craig Duval
Dental implants are widely considered to be the latest innovation in modern dentistry to replace one missing tooth or a number of teeth. At Sherwood Dental we offer dental implants to help our patients regain the function of their teeth and the appearance of their smile. We provide dental implants for our patients in Sherwood, Indooroopilly, Chelmer, Rocklea, Oxley and Southwest Brisbane.
A dental implant is made from a small artificial titanium rod which is implanted directly into the jawbone, acting as a replacement for the missing tooth’s root. This then provides stimulation to the jawbone which can help safeguard the health of the bone and the teeth and gum’s surrounding the missing tooth/teeth.
The implant is made using titanium which can allow new bone cells to grow around it: the implant can then integrate with the newly formed bone, fusing it into place. This process is known as ‘Osseointegration’.
A dental implant can be beneficial for a number of reasons and can be used to replace :
One implant will be placed in the jawbone, once the implant has been placed a crown will then be fixed to cover the top of the implant.
When Dr Craig Duval is replacing a number of missing teeth he will place a number of implants depending on your particular oral condition. Our Southwest Brisbane team will later attach a number of dental crowns or alternatively a dental bridge depending on the particular dental condition.
In this instance a number of implants will be placed, then either a fixed bridge will be fitted onto the implants or the implants will be used to anchor a removable denture.
Your experience and the success of your treatment is highly dependent upon choosing a skilled dentist that understands your concerns. Dr Craig Duval has performed the dental implant procedure many times and is very experienced in restorative dentistry. In addition to his experience, Dr Duval will take the time to thoroughly examine your teeth, soft tissues and jawbone to ensure the dental implant process is a suitable option for you.
A consultation appointment with Dr Craig Duval is necessary to determine if you are a suitable candidate for dental implants. During this consultation we can also explain the process of placing a dental implant to keep you fully informed. X-rays may be taken during this consultation and impressions (moulds) of your teeth may also be required. A treatment plan will then be drawn up by Dr Craig Duval and discussed with you, detailing all the foreseeable appointments required and the costing.
After we have completely discussed the process with you, you will be administered with a local anaesthetic to numb the area around where the implant is being placed. For our patients who are more anxious sedation can be given in order for you to sleep through your treatment. Dr Craig Duval offers the full spectrum of sedation dentistry techniques and is highly experienced in providing sedation dentistry. Once we have identified the ideal placing, an incision will be made in the gum where the implant is going to be placed. This will then expose the bone in order for Dr Craig Duval to then drill a small hole into the jawbone.
The titanium implant screw is then expertly inserted into the bone. A protective cover or ‘healing cap’ will then be placed over the top of the screw. This will then be either left visible in the mouth, or alternatively if the implant is deep in the jawbone the gum will then be stitched over the healing cap.
This is left for 3 to 6 months to allow the new bone to integrate with the implant, allowing the osseointegration process to occur. This process is extremely important as if osseointegration does not occur the implant will fail. Despite this, it is very rare that the dental implant will fail for most patients and Dr Craig Duval will ensure that the likelihood that your procedure will be successful is very high before you undergo this procedure.
Once the implant has securely integrated with the jawbone the healing cap can then be removed. The final crown or bridge can then be cemented or screwed into place or a removable overdenture can be attached to or supported by the implants. In some instances it may be necessary to place a temporary crown or bridge for a few months in order to allow the gum to heal fully before the permanent restoration can be fitted. Dr Craig Duval will assess the individual requirements of your treatment before the dental implant process begins.
Sound oral hygiene and regular check-ups with Dr Craig Duval and our Southwest Brisbane hygienist is a very important part of looking after your implants as the gums must remain healthy. If properly cared for the implants can then last a lifetime. When receiving a dental implant at our Sherwood dental practice Dr Craig Duval will ensure that you are kept informed and comfortable throughout your procedure in order to help you get the smile you deserve.
