Periodontal disease is the more advanced form of gum disease. This is when the bacterial infection under the gums has progressed and can be serious enough to affect the bone and the supporting tissues.

In the event that you have gum disease your gums may:

Brush your teeth at least twice a day

By brushing your teeth, your gums and your tongue, at least twice a day you can help to remove any bacteria before it begins to build up and cause infection in your mouth. It is important to gently rub your gums with your toothbrush when you are brushing in order to keep both your teeth and your gums clean simultaneously.

Floss at least once a day

Flossing is an important step which can often be overlooked by many people. Flossing is so important as it can remove the bacteria and food particles that can become caught between your teeth. The bacteria can spur an infection in the gum and soft tissue that surround your tooth which, if left untreated, can advance into more severe gum disease.

Avoid food or drinks that have a high sugar content

By avoiding as much sugar as possible you can help to prevent the amount of bacteria that can build up in your mouth.

During your general check-up appointment at our Sherwood practice our dental professionals can walk you through these steps and discuss the health of you gums with you.
