Protect your teeth against cavities
A fissure sealant is a tooth coloured material which is applied on the chewing surface of adult molar teeth in the early years in order to prevent cavities from developing later on. Sherwood Dental offers fissure sealants once the adult molars have fully developed on our younger patients here at our Sherwood practice.Once applied the coating should become bonded to the tooth and should stay on the teeth for a number of years. Here at Sherwood Dental we believe in providing long term care for our patients. Fissure sealants are a great preventive solution for cavities and tooth decay and should you require this treatment Dr Duval will explain to you in great detail how they can help prevent damage to your teeth.
Why do some patients need fissure sealants?
The back teeth are known as premolars and molars and often have pits and grooves on the biting surface, some of which can be deep and difficult to keep clean with brushing alone. Food particles can become trapped in these deep grooves and pits which can creates an optimal breeding ground for plaque and bacteria which if left, can develop into cavities. Fissure sealants work by sealing the deep pits and grooves making which can make it easier to clean your teeth and consequently prevent cavities from forming. During yourconsultation Dr Duval will assess your mouth to determine if you require any fissure sealants.
Receiving fissure sealants
- Firstly teeth which have the deepest grooves on which the sealants are being placed on will be cleaned and dried.
- The chewing surface of the tooth will then be prepared to accommodate the sealant.
- The Fissure Sealant is applied to the tooth using a small brush and then hardened by concentrated beam of ultraviolet light
To learn if your child would be an ideal candidate for fissure sealants our dental professionals at Sherwood Dental advise that you bring your child in for a dental check-up at our Sherwood practice.
