Smile wide with veneers
A veneer is a thin layer of tooth coloured material which is placed over your natural teeth to mask the underlying damaged, cracked or discoloured enamel. At Sherwood Dental in Sherwood we can assess your teeth to determine if dental veneers would be the best solution for your cracked, damaged or discoloured teeth. They are generally designed to enhance the appearance of your teeth by:
- Covering permanently stained teeth.
- Closing spaces between your teeth.
- Providing a straighter smile for you misaligned teeth.
- Enhance the appearance of damaged or broken teeth due to decay or trauma.
How do dental veneers work?
The procedure is usually completed in two visits which is a simple and relatively quick treatment to improve your smile. The first part of the treatment involves removing a small amount of enamel from the front of your tooth and the second appointment to have the veneers fitted into place. Each veneer is individually handcrafted by our dental technician to provide a healthy natural look to your damaged teeth.
What is the procedure?
If we decide that veneers are for you, two appointments will be needed to achieve your flawless smile. During the first appointment we will prepare the teeth and then during a second appointment we can fit the veneers.
Veneers preparation appointment
This appointment is essential to prepare your teeth for their dental veneers; firstly Dr Duval will give you a local anaesthetic to numb the tooth or teeth and the surrounding gum. Following this, a small amount of tooth will be removed from the front surface of your teeth to make room for the veneers. Once the teeth are the right size an impression (mould) will be taken using special dental putty to make an impression of your teeth. The impression (mould) of your teeth will then be sent to the dental laboratory where each veneer will be handcrafted to create your new smile. This process can take between two and three weeks.
Veneers fitting appointment
Your new veneers will be temporarily placed using a special paste which will allow Dr Duval to make any adjustments that are required and to make sure that you are happy with the appearance of your new smile. The veneers will then be removed and the surface of your teeth prepared for the dental adhesive. The veneers will be permanently cemented in place to create the flawless smile you have been waiting for.
Looking after your veneers
Veneers can last a long time however a lot depends on how you take care of them. Just because you have veneers does not mean you do not have to follow a regular hygiene routine. You must maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice a day, we also recommend visiting our Sherwood dental practice every six months.
